Authentic Making in the Art Room
Authentic Making in the Art Room
This is now a self-paced workshop, and links to recorded videos will be emailed after purchase.
Looking to offer more student choice in your classroom as a way for students to develop their unique artistic voice? Not sure how to get started?
This six-class, hands-on class is designed specifically for art educators at all levels interested in exploring choice-based art education!
It can be a daunting task to open our teaching practice to a more student directed approach as we envision utter chaos and a total free-for-all. But with a few tweaks, we can transform favorite projects and develop new ones that offer students more choice and more voice. Whether you want to dive head first into choice or you want to slowly transition, this class will allow you to be the student and experience the benefits of authentic making, and it will give you valuable ideas and resources on your journey to choice!
This class originally met on Zoom for 6 two-hour classes and focused on different strategies and challenges to help us include more student choice and voice in our teaching practice.
This is a pay-what-you-can workshop, so please select what you would like to pay below. Once you pay, you will be emailed the links to the recorded videos, typically within 24 hrs of purchase. This will be a separate email that I send out personally, and it is different from the order confirmation that you will receive automatically after purchase.
Materials:
Each week, we will focus on a different material or medium, but since it’s all about choice, use the materials you want to use.
Lesson 1 - Inspiration Station
How do artists develop ideas?
Focus:
Drawing — Grab your favorite drawing materials! Are you going to use pencil, pen, marker, colored pencil, charcoal, or pastels? Are you going to use a combination?
Lesson 2 - Big Ideas
How can artists use themes to inspire their art?
Focus:
Drawing — What did you use last time? Will you stick with that or will you explore a different material?
Lesson 3 - Playing with Materials
How can ideas grow from exploration and experimentation?
Focus:
Paper Sculpture — Grab some colored paper! I love Tru-Ray construction paper, but use what you have. And don’t forget the glue, tape, and/or staplers!
Lesson 4 - Building Skill
How can artists develop the skills for the materials they use?
Focus:
Clay — Do you have a preferred kind of clay? How about using something you haven’t used much before? Use ceramic clay, air dry clay, modeling clay, or polymer clay.
Lesson 5 - Artist Inspiration
How do artists find inspiration from other artists?
Focus:
Selecting Appropriate Materials
What will you make, and what materials will you use? Are you going to stick with something comfortable, or will you venture out of your comfort zone? Have a variety of options to work with because you never know where the art will take you.
Lesson 6 - Independence
How do artists create authentic art?
Focus:
Gaining Independence and Agency
Is there an idea, a technique, a material, or an artist that is just grabbing your imagination? What will you explore? Use any material that you wish.
