Beyond Blank Pages: An Online Workshop

from $100.00

This is now a self-paced workshop, and links to recorded videos will be emailed after purchase.

Challenge your notions of what a book is and what it can be! Starting with a blank journal, sketchbook, or planner, engage in a wide range of activities to weave a visual and written narrative. Explore simple printmaking techniques, a variety of letterforms and lettering techniques, and the layering of materials, ideas, and themes. Colors, images, and words will flow among, across, and through your pages as you manipulate the structure of pages with pockets, pop-ups, tears, cutouts, widows, foldouts, and more to transforming blank pages into a unified artistic vision.

This is a self-paced online workshop with 23 recorded videos, and is a pay-what-you-can class, so please select what you would like to pay below. Once you pay, you should receive an email confirmation. All video links and passwords will be emailed to you, usually within 24 hours.

Please email me if you have any questions.

Materials:

I don’t want this to be a class where you have to go out and buy a bunch of materials and supplies that you will not use again. You can most likely get by with materials that you already have, and so our main supplies are rather ordinary materials. The printmaking supplies, however, are not so common, and they are not absolutely vital, and I’ll discuss alternatives that can often be found around the house.

  • Blank journal, sketchbook, or planner - store bought or hand bound - make sure it has paper that can handle a variety of materials

  • Paint - I’ll be using primarily watercolor and watercolor pencil, but acrylic or gouache will work as well

  • Paint brushes

  • Scissors

  • Glue Stick (UHU Glue Stick 1.41 oz. recommended),

  • Markers, pens, and pencils - a variety of waterproof and water-soluble writing and drawing materials

  • Craft knife

  • Cutting mat

  • Collage materials – maps, photos, magazines, postcards, photocopies, colored papers, ticket stubs, and any other visually inspiring and personally relevant items

  • Packing tape

  • A variety of papers - tracing, drawing, and mixed media

  • Soft Rubber or Vinyl Printmaking Blocks - I like the Speedball Speedy Carve blocks

  • Linoleum cutters (for printmaking) - I like the Speedball Linoleum Cutter Set with handle and 5 cutters

FAQs:

Why is this workshop much more expensive than your other online workshops?

The simple answer is that this class is much more involved than any other online workshop or class that I’ve taught. It’s longer, there’s more instruction, and you simply get more. Originally designed as a 6-day in-person retreat, this online class has been adapted to create an experience that is just as in-depth as the in-person class, if not more so.

I’ve taken some of your classes and workshops before, will this be different?

Though many of the materials, techniques, and strategies have been covered in other classes and workshops, this is the first to put them all together in a single, all-encompassing workshop. So, there will be overlap with other workshops, but we’ll explore how to bring these different ideas, materials, and techniques together in a singular manner as we work to transform our blank pages.

How do I access the prerecorded videos when they are released?

All recorded videos will be hosted on Vimeo and will be password protected. When a new video is available, I’ll send out an email with a link to the video and the password. You will then be able to access the video. Please do not share the link or password with anyone.

Will the Live Sessions be recorded if I can’t make them or would like to review them?

Yes, the live sessions that will be hosted on Zoom will be recorded and uploaded to Vimeo. Once they have been uploaded, a link and password will be emailed to you and you can watch or review at your leisure.

Do I have to have to be part of Facebook?

You do not have to have a Facebook login, and no part of the class will take place on Facebook. A private Facebook Group will be set up for anyone in the class to join and share work, experiences, questions, and thoughts. It will be just for members of this class so it will be a private and safe space.

What if I don’t have all of the materials required for the class?

It is not required to have all of the materials that are listed. The main materials are most likely ones you already have, and there are usually alternatives for the ones that you don’t, especially the printmaking materials. I don’t want to require materials if you don’t plan on using them after the class is over.

Can I join the class after March 15th?

Yes, since all of the recordings are available indefinitely on Vimeo, you will have access to anything that was missed. You may miss some of the live sessions, depending on when you join, but they will be recorded and accessible.
