Developing the Magic: The Visual Journal - An Online Workshop

from $25.00

This is now a self-paced workshop, and links to recorded videos will be emailed after purchase.

The visual journal is a place where true magic can develop, but we have to be intentional with our purpose and approach. Join me as we take a deep dive into a variety of strategies for using the visual journal as a personal and artistic tool. We’ll explore all new artmaking activities as we dig deep into the reasons that we keep and work in a visual journal.

This workshop focuses primarily on the purpose and the process of using the visual journal and not so much on specific techniques. Though materials and techniques will be shared throughout the workshop, the focus will be on the variety of approaches that make the journal such personal work. The focus will be on going deeper with the journal and working in a very intentional way. It is a perfect follow to the Practicing Magic Workshop, but as a stand alone workshop, it is suitable for anyone wanting to know more about the visual journal who has some artmaking experience.

This four part, online workshop was originally offered as a live workshop through Zoom that met four times. It is designed to focus on different exercises and strategies for using in the visual journal, and you will have access to the unedited recorded class sessions in order to work at your own pace.

Like the original, live workshop, this is pay-what-you-can workshop, so please select what you would like to pay below. Once you pay you will be emailed links to the four recorded classes, typically within 24 hrs of purchase. This will be a separate email that I send out personally, and it is different from the order confirmation that you will receive automatically after purchase.

Supplies Needed:
A visual journal or sketchbook - A mixed media journal is a good choice since it has paper designed to withstand a wide variety of paints.
Paint - Watercolor and acrylic will both work. I’ll be using watercolor paint and watercolor pencil
Mark making items - We’ll be exploring how we can create interesting marks and textures with paint. I love using plastic mesh, bubble wrap, cardboard, string, and even my fingers to play with how I apply paint.
Variety of paint brushes
Scissors
Glue Stick - I like UHU, but if you’re using acrylic paint, acrylic medium is suitable
Markers, pens, and pencils - a variety of waterproof and water-soluble writing and drawing materials; paint markers are great to use
Collage materials - We’ll be using an assortment of items to glue into the journal, but try to find things that are personal. I love using movie tickets, mementos from travel, post cards, bottle labels, and other ephemera that I accumulate in day-to-day Life.

Optional Supplies:
Colored Pencils
Craft knife

Oil Pastels
Other favorite materials
