Hand-Cut Stencils and Carved Stamps: An Online Workshop
Hand-Cut Stencils and Carved Stamps: An Online Workshop
This is now a self-paced workshop, and links to recorded videos will be emailed after purchase.
Stencils and stamps are a great addition to any artist’s toolbox, and you can run to any arts and craft store or order online and get a ready supply for your creating and making. But what if you could use your original ideas and your original art to create unique, one-of-a-kind stencils and stamps. Join in to learn some simple techniques for creating images and motifs for your work. It’s not as hard as you might think. Come explore the possibilities of creating your own unique and original stencils and stamps to be used again and again.
This four part, online workshop was originally offered as a live workshop through Zoom that met four times. It is designed to focus on different techniques for creating original stencils and stamps, and you will have access to the unedited recorded class sessions in order to work at your own pace.
Like the original, live workshop, this is pay-what-you-can workshop, so please select what you would like to pay below. Once you pay you will be emailed links to the four recorded classes, typically within 24 hrs of purchase. This will be a separate email that I send out personally, and it is different from the order confirmation that you will receive automatically after purchase.
Materials:
Stencil Film - I like the Grafix Stencil Film that is blue. It’s sold in 9x12 sheets and is easy to cut. Some people use overhead transparency sheets, but it can be thin and tear easily. A readily available alternative is a thick card stock or poster board, though they won’t hold up as well since they’re paper.
Printing Block - Using a soft, rubber printing block will make carving much easier. There are a number to choose from, and I like the Speedball Speedy Carve Blocks. These pink blocks are easy to cut, and work well for stamp carving. I buy a bigger block and cut it down to smaller sizes.
Linoleum Cutters - You need something to carve the rubber block, and having a small set of cutters with a handle will make easy to carve. I like the Speedball Linoleum Cutters. The have a set that includes a handle and 5 blades.
Drawing Paper - We’ll use the paper to create our design before cutting it out of the film, so use the same size as the film - 9x12.
Pencils and eraser
Black permanent marker - Sharpie or anything equivalent will work
Markers, ink, and/or paint - You’ll want to try your creations out once they’re made, so grab your favorite markers, ink pads, or paints to use on your stencils and stamps.
Hobby or craft knife
Cutting mat
