Small Books, Mini-Journals, and Zines

from $35.00

This is now a self-paced workshop, and links to recorded videos will be emailed after purchase.

Come and explore making and creating small books and zines, and experience a different take on visual journaling.

Small spaces are intimate and offer unique creative opportunities for journaling, reflecting, and making, so join in as we make our own small books and zines and explore the creative possibilities that each format offers. After making our mini-journals and zines, we will work to fill them as we delve into themes, techniques, materials, and much more.

This was originally a live class where we met through Zoom each week for each of the 6 two-hour classes and focused on different techniques and concepts for working small!

This is a pay-what-you-can workshop, so please select what you would like to pay below. Once you pay, you will be emailed the links to the recorded videos, typically within 24 hrs of purchase. This will be a separate email that I send out personally, and it is different from the order confirmation that you will receive automatically after purchase.

Supplies Needed:

For the Small Pamphlet Stitch Journal, you will need:

  • 4-6 pieces of small mixed media paper for the pages. I use 5.5x7.5 inch mixed Strathmore 500 Series mixed media paper to give me a 3.5x5.5 inch book. It’s 190 g/m2, and it’s great for the book’s pages. Unfortunately, it’s only sold in large sheets or rolls. Use any size you like — 3x5 inch paper will give you a 2.5x3 inch book and a 6x8 inch paper will give you a 4x6 inch book.

  • 1 piece of heavyweight paper for the cover the same size as the pages above. I use a good heavy watercolor paper for the cover of the book.

  • Thread. I use cotton warp thread, but you can get bookbinding thread. Ordinary embroidery floss will work as well. You want a thick thread for binding the book together.

  • Needle. You can get bookbinding needles, but any metal needle with a sharp point that will fit the thread will work.

  • Optional: craft knife, metal ruler, cutting mat, and a stylus for scoring the paper..

For the zines, you will need:

  • 1 or more pieces of 9x12 inch or 8.5x11 inch mixed media paper. Again, I like Strathmore’s 500 Series mixed media paper, but good drawing paper can work really well — just nothing too thick since it will be folded.

  • Scissors

Other materials:

  • Paint - watercolor and/or acrylic will both work. I’ll be using watercolor paint and watercolor pencil

  • Variety of paint brushes

  • Glue Stick - I like UHU, but if you’re using acrylic paint, acrylic medium is suitable

  • Markers, pens, and pencils - a variety of waterproof and water-soluble writing and drawing materials - paint markers are great to use

  • Collage materials - maps, photos, postcards, photocopies, colored papers, ticket stubs, and any other visually inspiring and personally relevant items

Optional Materials:

  • Colored Pencils

  • Oil Pastels

  • Other favorite materials
