The Creative Boost: An Online Workshop
The Creative Boost: An Online Workshop
This is now a self-paced workshop, and links to recorded videos will be emailed after purchase.
Looking for fresh ideas for your art? Looking for some fun activities to help you get creative? Join me for a creative boost as we dive into all new exercises and activities to spark new ideas and directions for you and your art as we engage in some fun and enjoyable artmaking challenges. This is a perfect follow up to the Break Out Voice workshop, but it’s great for novices and anyone looking for some creative inspiration. No experience necessary — just a willingness to try and create.
This four-week online workshop is designed to challenge us in a variety of ways as we explore different media and ideas. Each class will focus on different materials, strategies, and challenges to push us in new directions.
This four part, online workshop was originally offered as a live workshop through Zoom that met four times. It is designed to focus on different exercises and strategies for giving ourselves a creative boost, and you will have access to the unedited recorded class sessions in order to work at your own pace.
Like the original, live workshop, this is pay-what-you-can workshop, so please select what you would like to pay below. Once you pay you will be emailed links to the four recorded classes, typically within 24 hrs of purchase. This will be a separate email that I send out personally, and it is different from the order confirmation that you will receive automatically after purchase.
Schedule:
Week 1: Painted Papers
We have some fun as we explore and experiment with a variety of painting techniques to create visually interesting papers that we can use in the future.
Materials:
Paper: We’ll be working on the small side, and something 5in x 7in or 6in x 8in will work well. You want something that will hold up to paint, so a decent drawing paper or mixed media paper is good. I like Strathmore 400 Series Recycled Drawing Paper or Strathmore 400 Series Mixed Media Paper
Watercolor Paint: Almost any watercolor will do, so use whatever tubes or pans you have.
Brushes and Water Cup
Week 2: Colored Pencils
We engage with colored pencils to create colorful designs and learn a few techniques to create depth and form.
Materials:
Paper: We’ll be working small again, so have at least 6 pieces of 3.5in x 5in, 4in x 6in, or 5in x 7in drawing or sketch paper. If you can, get some black paper as well. I like Strathmore’s Artagain Paper, but black construction paper will work as well. Don’t worry about having the exact size, just something small.
Colored Pencils: Almost any kind of colored pencil will do, and Crayola are adequate. But I really like Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils or Faber-Castell Polychromos Pencils.
Week 3: Painted Paper Collages
We use the papers that we made in the first class to create unique collages.
Materials:
Paper: We’ll be working small again, so have at least 6 pieces of 3.5in x 5in, 4in x 6in, or 5in x 7in drawing or sketch paper. I love using unlined index cards. Don’t worry about having the exact size, just something small like before.
Scissors: You could also use a craft knife and cutting mat.
Glue: I like UHU Glue Stic, but use whatever you like.
Week 4: Big Ideas
We use a bit of reflecting to combine ideas, materials, and techniques to explore some broader concepts and themes.
Materials:
Paper: This session is more open ended, but small sizes are still good for the artmaking. We’ll also be doing a little writing, so some paper to write on is good. I love using index cards, but a journal or notebook would be fine.
Favorite Materials: Since this session is more open ended, use what you want, but make certain to have a pen, pencil, or marker to write with.
